PLAYWORK ? history, ethos, politics and a personal reflection from the UK

In the UK, playworkers work with school-aged children in their out of school time. It is probably fair to say that contemporary playwork has developed from the adventure (or ‘junk’) playground movement that started in Denmark, although today UK playworkers work in a range of settings including out of school clubs, parks, hospitals, prisons and more. The session with Dr. Wendy Russell from Gloucestershire University will explore playwork’s history in the UK, its best-known theorists and its ethos (as outlined in the Playwork Principles), weaving in ideas about childhood, play, adults, politics and the purpose of out of school childcare. Expect information, provocations and some participative hard thinking.
