Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Bruce Ferwerda

Welcome to attend Bruce Ferwerda’s trial lecture for appointment as associate professor!

Title:

When Personalization is Not Enough: A Case of RecSys

Abstract:

Recommender systems are technologies that help us navigate through the abundance amount of online content that we have at our disposal nowadays. Services such as Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon have become indispensable in our lives. They continuously analyze our behavioral patterns to estimate our future behaviors, preferences, and needs. These estimations are used to produce recommendations to support us in our decision-making process by narrowing down our choice options.

This talk will take you on a past, present, and future journey through the world of recommender systems. A high-level overview will be provided starting with where recommender systems are coming from and highlight some of the challenges that these systems were facing that brought them to where they currently are. In here I will provide some examples of the line of research within personalization that I have been pursuing. The talk will end with a vision statement of where recommender systems (should) head in to for the future.

Welcome to the lecture!

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Johannes Schmidt

Title:

Non-monotonic reasoning, upper and lower bounds

Abstract:

Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms are particularly suitable for applications in a world that is affected by constant change, as is the case in many applications in artificial intelligence (AI). In this lecture I will introduce non-monotonic reasoning and describe previous and current research efforts that try to construct faster, more efficient algorithms (upper bounds), and at the same time determine how close to optimal the newly developed algorithms are (lower bounds). Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms have numerous application areas, e.g., scientific discovery, network security, logic programming, computational biology, medical diagnosis, knowledge base updates, explainability in machine learning, decision support. Current research lies the basis to develop faster solvers for non-monotonic reasoning, to be applicable in any of the aforementioned areas.

Practitioners´ Network Seminar - Dealing with Disruption: the case of death and divorce among owners

Welcome to the CeFEO Practitioners’ Network Seminar:

Date and time: March 9th from 16.00-17:00 via zoom

Dealing with Disruption: the case of death and divorce among owners

The loss or break-up of a family member is highly stressful for the family. Besides psychosocial effects, it necessitates financial and legal arrangements to formally separate an individual from a family unit. When an owner exits through death, divorce, or family conflict, his/her shares in the family business need to be transferred. This can lead to ownership changes, financial distress, conflicts, and more. This seminar will discuss enablers, tools, and considerations to help prepare business families for family disruptions.

CeFEO Presenters:

Massimo Bau - Director of CeFEO and Senior Associate Professor in Business Administration – JIBS

Kajsa Haag - CeFEO member, Associate Dean of Faculty, and Assistant Professor in Business Administration - JIBS

Professional Networking in Sweden by Amanda Herzog

For internationals who want to “crack the Swedish code”

Networking and referrals are incredibly important in Sweden.

If you’re an international professional and don’t know how to blend in with the Swedes, it can feel like you’re hitting dead ends and getting nowhere fast.

Or, if you’re Swedish but would like to improve your networking skills and see real results, then this workshop may be for you too!

Amanda Herzog is an American living in Sweden since 2017 and will be hosting the workshop. She moved there to attend Jönköping University as an exchange student and now works as an international marketing professional and personal branding consultant.

Her experiences of navigating the Swedish job market motivated her to “crack the Swedish code” and find the secret to career success.

Students who have taken her online course on networking in Sweden have reported amazing results:

  • Going from no responses on LinkedIn when sending messages to 3 out of 3 responding and agreeing to meet up when using her template (one of them was a Swedish recruiter)

  • Living in a remote location of Sweden in a town of less than 10,000 people to suddenly having 20 new connections in one week

  • Going from no interviews after months of applying to getting an offer for the exact job they wanted - all with no job application and only referral via networking

If you’re wondering how to have more career success in the Swedish workshop, then this is for you!

Join us on April 4, 2023 between 12.15-1 PM for a free workshop from Amanda Herzog on how to improve your networking skills in Sweden. You don’t want to miss this!

Registration on https://ju.jobteaser.com where you will be provided the link to the Zoom meeting.

Ownership Strategies in the family business

Ownership strategy is a relatively new concept but a promising approach to solving the ownership paradox. Ownership strategy offers the owner a tool that would be directed and applicable to guiding the managerial and governance systems of businesses. Ownership strategies are created for a specific need: the situation in the family, a certain question in the business, the need to control the group of businesses or the proactive management of the family members’ positions in the family business.

The Finnish Family Firms Association (2020) has defined ownership strategy as follows:” The owning family defines together the values, purpose, objectives, and measures guiding the ownership. These among others are the basis for ownership strategy that creates the framework for the board of directors’ decision making.” Krista and Marita will present two approaches to ownership strategy.

Speakers:  Krista Elo-Pärssinen (Family Business Expert, Ph.D., Senior Advisor at Finnish Family Firms Association) and Marita Rautiainen (Associate Professor LUT University, CeFEO Affiliated Researcher Jönköping International Business School)

Family business groups as a research context – An important but under studied phenomenon

Marita Rautiainen (presenter)

May 15th, 12:00-13:00 CET

B6046 or Via Zoom

ABSTRACT:  The paper highlights that research on turning one family business into a family business group (FBG), which may span across diverse business sectors and generations, is relevant and important so that we can understand the development and depth of family businesses.  The emergence and development of family business groups showcase the dynamics of families in business and the decisions they proactively, or reactively, take to business opportunities or institutional and contextual challenges. Family business groups are ubiquitous, and influential, and play a major role in national economies. While much of the current research around this topic has so far focused on emerging economies, more knowledge is needed on family business groups in developed economies; specifically, how the

MMTC Research Seminar presented by guest Federica Caboni.

Frederica Caboni is visiting JIBS and will present an MMTC research seminar entitled “Exploring augmented reality applications for sustainable retailing”.

Many transformations have affected the retail scenario in the last few years. Digitalization and sustainability are the main challenges to consider for the further development of retailing. From the assumption of the acceleration of digital innovation, could be interesting to consider augmented reality (AR) as a supportive technology that supports sustainable retailing. The aim of this seminar is to explore the adoption of augmented reality for sustainable retailing, highlighting the opportunities and limitations in the application. As a first approach in understanding how augmented reality could be helpful for sustainable retailing, this work contributed to exploring the intersections between the actual knowledge on the AR role in the retail industry and the 3Ps (Planet, People and Profit) principle for sustainability in the business context. Even commenting on specific AR applications in retail sustainability projects helps understanding the state of the art and expressing future perspectives in retail.

Open seminar with Professor Werner De Bondt: The behavioral revolution in finance

Welcome to an open seminar titled  “The behavioral revolution in finance” with Professor Werner De Bondt, Driehaus College of Business, DePaul University, Chicago.

Modern finance is the paradigm that has directed thinking in academic finance since the 1950s. It flows from a grand vision that aims to reconstruct society with individual rational action as its centerpiece. Behavioral finance took off in early 1980s. Its approach is nearly the opposite of modern finance. Behavioral finance does not assume rational agents or frictionless markets. Instead, it examines the psychology of financial decision-making. Furthermore, the institutional environment is seen as critically important.

What has been learned? A key insight is that financial intuition is fragile. It is frequently and predictably flawed. Since decision processes shape decision outcomes, the study of judgment fiascoes helps us to understand, predict and improve decisions made in households and organizations. Also, widely shared self-reinforcing misconceptions (“euphoria and hysteria”) regularly cause transient price bubbles in world financial markets. Besides opportunities for profit, the errors of naive investors create much risk, sometimes with macro-economic effects. Policy makers have no choice but to pay close attention.

Werner De Bondt (Ph.D., Cornell University, 1985) is one of the originators of behavioral finance. He studies the psychology of financial decision-making. De Bondt is the Founding Director of the Richard H. Driehaus Center for Behavioral Finance at DePaul University in Chicago. Earlier (1992-2003), he was the Frank Graner Professor of Investment Management at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. During 2019-2020, he was the Thomas F. Gleed Chair of Business Administration at Seattle University. Over the years, he has also taught at universities in Belgium, The Netherlands and Switzerland. Werner De Bondt’s publications have appeared in top academic journals. He is a frequent speaker to academics and investment professionals around the globe.

Title
Digitalization for a Sustainable Built Environment

Abstract

The construction sector is a key area that has significant impacts on economy and environment. The sector contributes to countries’ economies, provides direct and indirect job opportunities and satisfies people’s needs for buildings and facilities. Moreover, this sector is one of the main consumers of resources: about 50% of the total use of raw materials, and 36% of the global final energy use. Digital technologies, such as BIM and GIS, can contribute to a more efficient and sustainable built environment by enhancing efficiency, reducing waste, improving monitoring, contributing to better decision-making, cutting time and costs during the construction process, allowing the creation of digital models to predict and control buildings’ performances. In this lecture, I will try to explain the role of digitalization in the construction sector, and how it contributes to a more sustainable built environment. I will also argue that a multidisciplinary research approach has  a key role in the construction sector’s digitalization process.

Docent lecture by Johannes Hagen The Swedish Retirement Enigma

Welcome to Johannes Hagen´s Docent lecture in Economics with the title

”The Swedish Retirement Enigma”

on Tuesday, 12th of September at 1 pm in B3052

Members of the docent board are Leona Achtenhagen, Scott Hacker and Pär Sjölander.

Short description of the lecture:
This lecture examines the intricacies of Sweden's internationally acclaimed pension system. While actual pension levels in Sweden are higher than commonly perceived, they coincide with rising inequality and growing system complexity. Many actively manage their pensions, but evidence also points to widespread inertia among retirement savers. The lecture also discusses policy directions for the future.

Go Exchange fair on campus

It’s almost time for the campus to buzz with a truly international atmosphere. On Wednesday 20 September, 11.00 - 13.00, it is time for our Go Exchange fair.

The fair will be held outside on campus between the library and students' house (in case of bad weather in the schools' entrances).

This is an opportunity for the exchange students that are currently studying at Jönköping University to promote our partner universities as well as share their wonderful experiences from studying abroad.

The purpose of the fair is to inspire other students at JU to take the opportunity to study abroad as well as encourage a curiosity to learn about the many different cultures we have on campus.

At 12:30, in room B1024 (JIBS), International Office will have an information session for all JU students interested in exchange studies.

All students and staff are welcome to come, learn and be inspired.

Higher Seminar in Bilingualism - Minority language policy in Sweden: Colonial logic and affective resistance

Welcome to take part in a seminar by Tommaso Milani, The Pennsylvania State University, Dpt. of Applied Linguistics, Tuesday October 17th, 15:00–16:30 (Zoom)

Abstract

Sweden has often been hailed as a textbook example of ‘multicultural pluralist citizenship’ (Koopmans and Statham 1999, 661); that is, a context in which ‘the state not only offers easy access to full social and political rights, but actually sponsors ethnic difference’ (ibid.). While it is true that the Language Law in Sweden overtly ratifies multilingualism, in this talk I illustrate how language policies about so-called ‘national minority languages’ (Finnish, Meänkieli, Romani, Sami and Yiddish) are framed by the three main principles that have characterized a colonial logic: census, maps and museum (Anderson 1991; see also Gal 2021). In order to bring into relief the coloniality of Swedish minority language policy,

I will focus on a language, Yiddish, which does not have a straightforward link to colonialism in Sweden but has posed a series of challenges to legislators. More specifically, I will illustrate how a colonial logic based on the principles of census, maps and museum was used in order to make sense of Yiddish and ultimately argue against its recognition as a national minority language. However, I will also show how Yiddish language activists reacted through ‘affective practices’ (Wetherell 2012), which led to the official recognition of Yiddish in the end. Through these examples, I not only hope to engage with current discussions about decolonial perspectives in applied linguistics (Pennycook and Makoni 2021) but also give an example of a somewhat overlooked aspect of language policy, namely its affective dimensions (see also Årman 2020).

Designing for additive manufacturing: Challenges and opportunities

Abstract

Additive Manufacturing (AM), often referred to as 3D printing, has emerged in recent years with the promise to transform the world of manufacturing and production. This technology offers unprecedented design and customization flexibility, capable of reshaping industries ranging from aerospace and healthcare to automotive and consumer goods. However, this has not happened yet. The paradigm shift is not without its unique set of challenges and opportunities that demand careful attention.

This talk will delve into the multifaceted landscape of Additive Manufacturing, exploring the challenges faced by businesses and industries seeking to harness its potential. General opportunities that AM presents will be illuminated and an industrial case study will be presented.
