In this dissertation, I examine the social and communicative lives of deaf youth in Iquitos, Peru using a language socialization approach that combines ethnographic research with interactional analysis. I illustrate this approach using the data of three deaf boys, Luis, José, and Jeremy, whom I met while observing their regular education mainstream classroom in 2014. All three boys were similar in that they had no previous access to an established language. Their deafness precluded access to spoken Spanish, they had not received hearing assistive technology, and had not been exposed to Peruvian Sign Language.

Based on the existing literature, I began my research in Iquitos under the assumption that the deaf youth I would meet would be cut-off from the surrounding social world and would neither share a language with the individuals around them, nor have any language at all. Yet, through my ethnographic fieldwork, I found that these boys had remarkably rich social and communicative lives. They were integral members of their households, had friends whom they played with and had crushes on, were frequent customers at the family run shops in their neighborhoods, and attended school where they were busy doing the work of being students. The interactional analyses illustrate how the boys use their manual communication systems to navigate the distinct affordances provided by their home and school environments.

In this dissertation, I demonstrate how the language socialization paradigm provides an important advance to studying the communication of deaf individuals without access to an existing language. The language socialization approach sheds light on how these sign systems are co-created in interaction with a community of individuals and rely on a variety of communicative resources, including manual signs, vocalizations, eye gaze, body orientation, and the manipulation of objects. Additionally, this dissertation addresses the future possibilities for deaf youth growing up in Iquitos. I advocate for providing deaf youth with access to Peruvian Sign Language, as well as grassroots community efforts to address the numerous structural barriers that deaf individuals face as they move into adulthood in Iquitos.

Digitization in construction? Trial lecture for appointment as a docent, Peter Johansson

Welcome to attend Peter Johansson's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor!

Title: Human-, Product-, Environmental- and Building Information Management. Why we need it and how to get it.

Abstract:

Buildings are complex products that were meant initially for human shelter and security. The industrialization allowed humans to work more and longer indoors and to use machines. The digitalization continually creates new opportunities and today, computers are the most important tools for engineers. The use of digital models in engineering design continuously improves the possibilities to evaluate building performance. In this lecture, it will be presented how simulation-driven design can be used to combine economic, ecological, and social values in the optimization of built environments. It will be discussed and exemplified why environmental information, information regarding manufactured products, and information concerning human behavior and preferences needs to be incorporated in Building Information Management (BIM). The challenge of using digital technology to collect and manage the information needed will also be described.

Seminar presented by Jan Alpenberg, sernior lecturere at Linneus University

Jan will present a paper co-authored with Fredrik Karlsson: “The importance of the symbiosis - Working Environment Conditions in Manufacturing Lean Enterprises - effects and implications”.

Lean production (LP) has been the dominant production rhetoric for the last couple of decades but there is limited and ambiguous knowledge concerning the impacts of how LP practices influences the working environment conditions. In their study, the authors add granularity through in-depth empirical studies to the field and provide evidence for both positive and negative impact of the use of LP on the perceived working environment conditions among employees in the manufacturing sector.

MMTC Research Seminar

Sara Ekberg will present a research seminar on the topic "The role of translation in the formation of a field; the case of a startup ecosystem".

The seminar will focus on a paper she is working on together with Paul Spee and Anna Jenkins from the The University of Queensland Business School about the emergence of fields. While mature fields a marked by stability, defined roles, relationships, and rules, emerging fields are uncertain and ambiguous, without clarity about roles, relationship, or even the common interests. On the organizational level, previous studies have argued that institutional entrepreneurs have ‘piggybacked’ on legitimization mechanism from external fields to create new structure and legitimize new organizational forms, but know less about how the process shapes the trajectory of a field.
