Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Johannes Schmidt

Welcome to attend Johannes Schmidt’s trial lecture for appointment as associate professor!

Title:

Non-monotonic reasoning, upper and lower bounds

Abstract:

Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms are particularly suitable for applications in a world that is affected by constant change, as is the case in many applications in artificial intelligence (AI). In this lecture I will introduce non-monotonic reasoning and describe previous and current research efforts that try to construct faster, more efficient algorithms (upper bounds), and at the same time determine how close to optimal the newly developed algorithms are (lower bounds). Non-monotonic reasoning formalisms have numerous application areas, e.g., scientific discovery, network security, logic programming, computational biology, medical diagnosis, knowledge base updates, explainability in machine learning, decision support. Current research lies the basis to develop faster solvers for non-monotonic reasoning, to be applicable in any of the aforementioned areas.

Title:

When Personalization is Not Enough: A Case of RecSys

Abstract:

Recommender systems are technologies that help us navigate through the abundance amount of online content that we have at our disposal nowadays. Services such as Netflix, Spotify, and Amazon have become indispensable in our lives. They continuously analyze our behavioral patterns to estimate our future behaviors, preferences, and needs. These estimations are used to produce recommendations to support us in our decision-making process by narrowing down our choice options.

This talk will take you on a past, present, and future journey through the world of recommender systems. A high-level overview will be provided starting with where recommender systems are coming from and highlight some of the challenges that these systems were facing that brought them to where they currently are. In here I will provide some examples of the line of research within personalization that I have been pursuing. The talk will end with a vision statement of where recommender systems (should) head in to for the future.

Welcome to the lecture!

Practitioners´ Network Seminar - Dealing with Disruption: the case of death and divorce among owners

Welcome to the CeFEO Practitioners’ Network Seminar:

Date and time: March 9th from 16.00-17:00 via zoom

Dealing with Disruption: the case of death and divorce among owners

The loss or break-up of a family member is highly stressful for the family. Besides psychosocial effects, it necessitates financial and legal arrangements to formally separate an individual from a family unit. When an owner exits through death, divorce, or family conflict, his/her shares in the family business need to be transferred. This can lead to ownership changes, financial distress, conflicts, and more. This seminar will discuss enablers, tools, and considerations to help prepare business families for family disruptions.

CeFEO Presenters:

Massimo Bau - Director of CeFEO and Senior Associate Professor in Business Administration – JIBS

Kajsa Haag - CeFEO member, Associate Dean of Faculty, and Assistant Professor in Business Administration - JIBS

Hanna Almlöf - CeFEO Affiliated Researcher and Associate professor in Commercial Law at the Linköping University

External Enablement of Entrepreneurship workshop

The first JIBS workshop on ‘External Enablement of Entrepreneurship’ provides a unique platform for researchers to engage in comprehensive discussion and knowledge sharing about the ‘external enabler’ construct and framework. The workshop brings together ‘external enabler’ experts and scholars interested in applying the framework to provide feedback on current research projects and learn how to position and develop research on external enablers. In addition, participants will have the chance to pitch early-stage research ideas and receive feedback on their current projects.
