Aspects on semi-multiscale numerical modeling

The concept of numerical modeling in industry started in the late 1950's, primarily in the airplane industry. Numerical methods, such as the finite element method, later became the preferred choice of method to use when analyzing complex components on a structural length scale. However, due to limited computational power, the detail and information of the finite element models was governed by the computational cost. Due to increasing computational power, the detail and information of the finite element models increase and in the past decade, finite element models even contain information about the microstructure. The lecture will give an overview of numerical modeling techniques and their applications in a variety of different areas.
