Trial lecture for appointment as a docent (reader) - Torsten Sjögren

Torsten Sjögrens' trial lecture for appointment as a docent (reader) that will be held on Tuesday the 7th of June, 11 - 12 am in E1405, School of Engineering. Welcome to attend the lecture!

Seeing is believing - Using digita image correlation in applied research

When studying the mechanical behavior of engineering systems subjected to load, some kind of measurement system is used to acquire data that describe the behavior of the system. Most commonly the applied load and deformation are monitored and from these stresses and strains, and thus failure parameters can be derived. For a better resolved visualization of the strains, optical techniques like digital image correlation (DIC) can be used. These techniques have been available for several decades but have recently found increasing use because of the improved computing power and lower hardware cost. Furthermore, these techniques give experimental data to validate material models used in e.g. finite element simulations. The lecture will give an overview of digital image correlation and its use in applied research.
