Seminar: New technologies and the evolving conception of copyright protection

The purpose of this seminar is to explain the functioning of Copyright law in the technological environment determining also the possibility of recognizing new spaces for copyright protection for non-traditional works of authorship with respect to new technologies, such as 3D Printings, engineered genetic data and works generated by artificial intelligence.

This is a very relevant and topical subject at the moment and has multi-disciplinary appeal also in light of the current debate on the modernisation of EU copyright rules. The protection of new creative output is of great importance for the innovation-based knowledge society and it is a generally recognized priority for all advanced economies.

Since its conception, copyright law has been constantly evolving to keep up with technological advances it will continue to change. There is in fact a progressive expansion of copyrightable subject matter. Authors and creative people are indeed continually finding new ways of expressing themselves, being often difficult to foresee the forms that these new expressive methods will take.
