Keynote: Business digitalisation with a focus on IT-enabled change in supply-chain management

A keynote speaker (one-day) event at JIBS:

Business digitalisation with a focus on IT-enabled change in supply-chain management

Jönköping International Business School (JIBS) invites JU students and staff to its one-day event on business digitalisation as part of its IT-Enabled Change in Supply-Chain Management module.

Associate Lecturer Abtin Rezaeenia has invited his former colleague at Otis Worldwide Corporation, Björn Molzahn (currently finance director at Otis Global Major Projects), to share his knowledge and experience with students studying business-related disciplines such as supply-chain management, finance, marketing, leadership, management, HR, IT, AI, manufacturing, and engineering.

The event will take place on 23 February 2022 on Zoom and will be divided into morning and afternoon sessions. The morning session will start at 10:00 am, in which Abtin will welcome everyone and introduce Mr Molzahn.

https://ju-se.zoom.us/j/64139805193

Lunchbreak is scheduled for 1:00 pm. The afternoon session will start at 2:00 pm in the form of a workshop on how Otis uses data and IT systems for forecasting in supply-chain, finance, sales, and marketing purposes.

The event will conclude with a Q&A session.

About the guest speaker

Björn Molzahn is finance director within the Global Major Projects group of OTIS Worldwide Corp. In this role he provides support and oversight for all major projects from pre-bid to completion. He is also involved in several transformative projects, including digital transformation.

Björn started his career in banking with an apprenticeship at Deutsche Bank, followed by working in East Germany. He went on to study economic science, graduating in finance and financial accounting, commercial law, human resources and management. He joined OTIS as a trainee in finance, and is now in his 25th year with the group.

Björn has served in various country, regional and global roles, spanning from finance and treasury over supply chain to transformation and integration. Björn has played a part in the implementation of various ERP systems, such as Baan, JDE and SAP, structuring organisations and transforming operational structures. He has also worked on internal projects such that they benefit from macro-economic changes, such as the internationalisation of Chinese Renminbi, and enabled such projects to manage exposure from such phenomena as the Euro crisis.

His certification as an internal auditor has served him well in a number of projects, and in the promotion of OTIS absolutes, in particular business ethics.

Working in many areas has exposed him to a variety of cultures, and provided fantastic learning opportunities in and outside the corporate world.

Björn was appointed to the Examination Board of the Berufsakademie, Berlin, and enjoyed his role there in education, until his move to Shanghai, China led him to suspend his involvement. He has also been a trainer for change and conflict management, teambuilding, empowerment and coaching.

While the majority of his career has been in finance, Björn considers himself more of a process person than a finance person.

Scandinavian Art and Popular Culture

We're odd. At least from a global perspective, the small country of Sweden together with the other Scandinavian countries are outliers in culture, values and beliefs. It shows in our society, in the way we are, in the things we innovate and in what we export. It also shows clearly in art and pop culture. This lecture digs into the current to find links to history, and tries to explain Scandinavian trends in ideology, food, music, movies, sports, humour, art and much more to the "outsider looking in". Welcome!

Title
The Promised Land of Contradictions: The dynamics of learning in industrial operations

Abstract

Industrial operations struggle with how to efficiently manage the daily workflow while at the same time, under uncertain conditions, renew to be competitive. Familiar and current knowledge is challenged by new and unexplored knowledge, planned activities are challenged by unforeseen events and hierarchical structures are challenged by cross-functional collaborations. These contradictory logics, together with technology and human action that are increasingly integrated into various work processes in advanced socio-technical systems, need new ways of leading and organizing for learning in industrial operations. This has great impact on the work organization within operations, where research and education continuously need to be updated, to prepare leader due to future challenges.

This is what Annika's trial lecture, held in Swedish, will focus on - Welcome!

MMTC extra seminar with guest Sebastian Villa Betancur (Universidad de Los Andes)

You are invited to join us for this extra MMTC seminar with guest Sebastian Villa Betancur (Universidad de Los Andes)

Seminar title: “ To Earmark or to Non-Earmark? The Role of Control, Transparency, Salience, and Warm-Glow”

Seminar description: Charities face tension when deciding whether or not to offer earmarking to donors—i.e., let donors restrict donations to a specific purpose. Research shows that earmarking decreases operational performance because it limits charities’ flexibility to use donations. However, there is also a common belief that earmarking increases donations. Earmarking is assumed to increase donations through four mechanisms: by (i) giving donors control over their donations, (ii) increasing operational transparency of donations (iii) leveraging highly salient projects, and (iv) increasing donors’ warm-glow. To resolve this tension, we study how, when, and why earmarking affects donors’ decisions. We consider three important decisions donors make that impact the fundraising outcome: preference between earmarking and non-earmarking, the decision on whether to donate or not (i.e., donor activation) and the donation amount. We design three online experiments that allow us to quantify the effect of earmarking on donors’ decisions and investigate the role of the four mechanisms in fundraising. Our results reveal that earmarking has varying effects on the three decisions donors make and does not always increase donations. Moreover, we determine the conditions under which the four mechanisms affect the outcome of fundraising campaigns. Our findings provide clear insights into how charities can design fundraising campaigns more effectively and suggest when to leverage earmarking and the four mechanisms depending on the charity’s fundraising goals.

As part of a Linnaeus Palme teaching Exchange between Universidad de Los Andes, in Colombia, and Jonkoping University in Spring 2022, Sebastian Villa Betancur - specialist in the humanitarian logistics field - will be involved in teaching and seminars activities in connection to the coming Humanitarian Logistics course at JIBS. To create an understanding of other nations' conditions to prepare and respond to crises, Sebastian will be giving seminars for other academics linking the Colombian perspective to the Humanitarian Logistics field. The seminar will be arranged within the research frame of the MMTC at JIBS.

Lifelong Learning Policy and Practice in Japan - Traces of inspiration from Sweden

Welcome to a Seminar with Guest Researcher Yukiko Sawano, Professor, University of Sacred Heart, Tokyo.

In Japan, the endeavor to construct ‘lifelong learning society’ has been taken since the introduction of the concept of ‘lifelong education’ and ‘lifelong learning’ raised by UNESCO and OECD in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The overall goal of constructing lifelong learning society in Japan is to adapt to the changes faced by the citizens. In the seminar, firstly development of lifelong learning concept, policy and practice since the middle of 20th century will be reviewed.  Secondly, it will shed light on the influence of “Sweden Model” in Japanese lifelong learning, such as “recurrent education” and “popular education (folkbildning)”. Lastly, new movement by younger generation to discover the attractiveness of Nordic lifelong learning will be introduced.

MMTC Research Seminar

Annika will present her early-stage paper “From ethical discussions to investment tips in the media? How field actors frame a moral market during its emergence, growth, and conventionalization”.

The research contributes to the question of how different actors frame a morally influenced product in the public media discourse and how actors and frames chance between the market's emergence, growth, and conventionalization. For the paper she systematically analyzed about 2700 news articles, representing the media coverage of the German market for vegetarian and vegan meat substitute products between 1995 and 2020.

The seminar will be conducted in a hybrid seminar. We are meeting in room B6046 or on zoom

Conflict over Palestine - movies directed by young girls about their everyday life on the outskirts of Jerusalem

Date: 23rd September
Room: Hc113, The school of Education and Communication (HLK)
Time: 3-5 pm

In March 2022, the French association “Le vidéobus” did a film-project in Az-Zayem - east of Jerusalem - with 18 school girls in collaboration with the French consulate of Jerusalem and Odeh films production.

These films shot by young Palestinian women offer a unique look at the outskirts of Jerusalem as well as the conflict. The aim is to allow these teenage girls to have access to an artistic practice and to offer them a means of expression through way of cinema.

The lecture is held by Aya Bejermi, a Franco-Palestinian who lives in Jönköping. She did her dissertation for Master of Laws regarding Syrian and Palestine refugees. She is now a PhD student at Science Po Bordeaux in France. As a member of “Le vidéobus” she participated in the film project in East-Jerusalem.
After the screening, these will be time for an open discussion.

MMTC Research Seminar presented by guest Marcus Thiell

MMTC Research Seminar presented by guest Marcus Thiell - Associate Professor at Universidad de los Andes School of Management, Bogotá (Colombia).

Marcus will present a seminar entitled "The Antifragility-dilemma of Global Supply Chains – the Colombian Perspective".

Having experienced several significant disruptions over the last two decades, supply chains around the world are increasingly requested to restructure their design. Identifying high levels of supply chain fragility as potential root cause for such disruptions, the creation of anti-fragile supply chains might be a corresponding response to satisfy diverse stakeholder expectations. The benefits may be manifold, e.g., strengthening of local economies, reduction of transport emissions, reduction of agency- as well as transaction cost.

Focusing on Colombia, a country characterized by premature deindustrialization, the likely impact of anti-fragile supply chain designs will be discussed, guided by the question: are supply chains around the world equally prepared to make such design-shift and would they equally benefit from it?

During the pandemic, the labour market for cultural workers disappeared almost overnight, and Anders took a job as a bicycle messenger at Foodora to survive. During his time at Foodora, he wrote the acclaimed book "Cykelbudet" which describes his life as an invisible and, at the same time, totally monitored cog in the gig economy. Anders Teglund also got involved in trade unions. He was one of several driving forces for Foodora to sign a collective agreement with Transport finally.

WEBLEARN - Diversity and equal opportunity in metal component manufacturing sector

Metal industry (and the academic sector) has historically been one of the male-dominated industries, making it not easy for female pioneers to overcome prejudice and cultural barriers to advance their careers. Diversity and equal opportunity affect efficiency potential in both academia and industry and has adverse effects on the attraction of talent to the field.
In this webinar, we will go through different aspects of diversity and equal opportunities, including gender study theories, and some related personal experiences from academic and industrial perspectives. The webinar follows with a case study on practising diversity and equal opportunity in the industry. The webinar will be in English.

Trial lecture for appointment as associate professor - Hamid Jafari

Welcome to attend Hamid Jafari's trial lecture for appointment as associate professor on December 13, 10 am - 11 am.

Title of the lecture:

Responsiveness and Supply Chain Capabilities: Insights from Omnichannel Retailing and Manufacturing

Abstract:

Responsiveness is gaining significant attention among scholars and practitioners within Operations and Supply Chain Management as the “ultimate” goal in the marketplace. This is driven by the extreme levels of environmental uncertainty resulting from often complex supply chains, volatility in supply and demand, and fierce competition. Meanwhile, the blurring of boundaries between the actors and functions, much thanks to the advancements in digital technologies and integrating initiatives in supply chains, has had profound implications for the relevance and longevity of competitive advantages.

This lecture will present some takeaways from a few projects on responsiveness in the contexts of omnichannel retailing and manufacturing. Specifically, it will shed light on how responsiveness can be achieved via the interplay or nexus of other distinct, and often interchangeably used, supply chain capabilities such as flexibility, agility, adaptability, and resilience. In this regard, examples will be shared on the role of internal and external contingencies.
