CeFEO Research seminarTechnological Turbulence and Competition Intensity as Drivers of Business Model Innovation in Family SMEs: The Role of Strategic Innovation Readiness
Mercedes Gracia Laborda (presenter) (co-authored with Carolina Lopez Nicolas and Angel Luis Meroño Cerdan) (Mercedes is a visiting PhD candidate from the University of Murcia)
February 3, 12:00-13:00 CEST B6046 and Zoom Zoom link: http://cefeo.se/zoom
ABSTRACT: Drawing on the Resource-Based View and the Socioemotional Wealth approach, this study proposes and tests a model that extends the knowledge of BMI’s external drivers, competition intensity and technological turbulence. More precisely, we provide new insights to the relationship between these drivers and BMI novelty and scope, being mediated by strategic innovation readiness. We test the contingent effect of family firm on this model. To assess the relationships proposed, data were obtained from a European Commission international project. 417 Small and Medium-sized Enterprises and analysed using partial least squares structural equation modelling. The results indicate that competition intensity positively affects BMI novelty through the full mediation of strategic innovation readiness. In addition, strategic innovation readiness acts as a partial complementary mediator in the relationship between competition intensity and BMI scope as well as technological turbulence and BMI types. Furthermore, a multigroup analysis reveals that the impact of competition intensity on BMI is greater for non-family than for family SMEs. An important implication relates to the paramount role of strategic innovation readiness both for family and non-family SMEs to thrive in a turbulent technological environment. When developing the firm culture and strategic orientation, managers should embed strategic innovation readiness into their business processes and activities to enable a rapid response to external changes through BMI. CeFEO Research seminarKilling me softly: How the aesthetic experience of audiences determines family ownership
Peter Trümmel
February 24, 12:00-13:00 CST B7030 and Zoom Zoom link: http://cefeo.se/zoom ABSTRACT: Why do we recognize some family firms as such, yet not others? Family ownership is a defining feature of family firms, yet research has predominantly focused on the family and their owned enterprises, neglecting the role of external audiences’ perceptions in shaping a family’s ownership. This study examines how ownership manifests in the aesthetics of a family firm’s activities and outcomes, and how external audiences recognize and judge these expressions. Using a qualitative single case study of a family firm and its organizational artifacts, this research aims to develop a construct to capture external audiences’ reactions to family ownership. Hoping to develop a construct that complements psychological ownership, I want highlight the reciprocal relationship between family firms and their environments on a human-centered basis that emphasizes our bodily condition. CeFEO Research seminarGenZ and the (uncertain) future of family business
Kajsa Haag and Bart Henssen (presenters) (co-authored with Julia Suess-Reyes)
March 3, 12:00-13:00 CST B6046 and Zoom Zoom link: http://cefeo.se/zoom
ABSTRACT: For family businesses to continue over time, new generations must accept the task of continuing their legacy. This is often a significant concern for current family business leaders, as trans-generational entrepreneurship has demonstrated positive outcomes for both businesses and society. However, considering the societal level changes in job mobility and recent reports on the career aspirations of young people, the future of family business seems to be at jeopardy. To gain insights into the future of family business, our research focuses on a new generation whose intentions are crucial, yet quite unknown. We interview family members belonging to the societal generation called ‘GenZ’, born 1997-2013, to explore their intentions (or lack thereof) for joining their family’s business. We respond to calls for understanding the “modern family” in family business research and explore the concept of ‘generation’ from a sociological perspective as a category of societal belonging. CeFEO Research seminarDiversity in the Making: Insights from Family Business Research
Lia Tirabeni and Daniel Pittino (Lia Tirabeni is Associate Professor at University of Milano-Bicocca)
March 10, 12:00-13:00 CST B7030 and Zoom Zoom link: http://cefeo.se/zoom
ABSTRACT: How does paternalistic leadership in family businesses shape diversity, particularly in terms of gender, age, and social belonging? Furthermore, how do these factors contribute to patterns of inclusion and exclusion within family firms? This study explores various dimensions of diversity in the family business context, with a particular focus on how paternalistic leadership—characterized by clan control and socioemotional wealth preservation—influences organizational practices that foster and perpetuate discriminatory and exclusionary dynamics. Specifically, we examine how gender, age, and social belonging—whether to the family unit or the local societal context— an influence roles, conditions, and opportunities within family firms. Our analysis builds on insights from recent literature in family business research, supplemented by empirical findings and fields notes from the Italian family business context. The study underscores that, while family businesses are highly resilient and play a crucial role in global economies, their deeply ingrained traditional structures can create obstacles to diversity and inclusion. Addressing these challenges requires both internal cultural transformations and external interventions from policymakers, investors, and employees. Finally, this research calls for further investigation into how family business governance and leadership practices contribute to shape broader societal perceptions of diversity. Given their strong socio-economic influence, family firms may, in fact, serve as mechanisms for the reproduction of traditional gender roles and social hierarchies, thereby influencing inclusion policies and diversity frameworks across the wider economic and social landscape beyond the firm. CeNSE SeminarWelcome to a seminar entitled "Local labor market effects of Amazon" held by Evan Cunningham, University of Minnesota. Place: B5002 Abstract: Does the entry of a large employer to a local labor market increase welfare for residents? To answer this question, I analyze the local effects of the dramatic expansion of Amazon’s fulfillment center (FC) network from 2010 onward. I exploit the staggered roll-out of FCs across large U.S. metros in a difference-in-difference framework. I find Amazon’s entry in a metro increases the total employment rate by 1.0 percentage point and average wages by 0.7 percent. The composition of employment shifts from retail and wholesale trade to warehousing and tradeable services, primarily driven by younger workers. Employment gains are concentrated among non-college workers. Rents increase by 1.1 percent, utility costs increase by 6.0 percent, and home values increase by 5.6 percent. I interpret these results through the lens of a static spatial equilibrium model. I find a net increase in aggregate welfare: the average worker is willing to pay $329 per year (0.8 percent of income) to live in a large city with Amazon. The welfare gains are primarily driven by rising home values; the increase in employment, wages, and sectoral shifts account for only one-tenth of the increase. These positive impacts are partially offset by rising local costs of living and the declining value of non-wage amenities in large cities. Government subsidies have a negligible effect on welfare as they are a small share of state and local budgets. Organizer: Centre for Entrepreneurship and Spatial Economics |

Understanding PMI - A Key to Economic AnalysisOn April 3, 2025, Swedbank and Silf will visit Jönköping International Business School for a lecture on what PMI is, why it is conducted, and how the index can be used both for educational purposes and as a decision-making tool for purchasing managers. During the lecture, the latest PMI results will be presented. Jörgen Kennemar from Swedbank and Emil Ahlström from Silf Network will discuss the current economic situation in the Swedish manufacturing and service sectors and the purchasing plans. They will highlight the bright spots and challenges Swedish companies face and provide an international outlook. About PMI PMI is an essential economic indicator derived from surveys conducted among 200 purchasing managers. With values above 50 indicating growth and below showing decline, the index provides important insights used by economists, analysts, and policymakers to understand market conditions. Since its establishment in collaboration with Swedbank and Silf (Swedish Association for Purchasing and Logistics) in 1994, the Swedish PMI has been instrumental in guiding informed business strategies. The event is free and open to everyone interested.

MMTC research Seminar presented by guest Cindy Price ShultzMMTC research Seminar presented by guest Cindy Price Shultz
Cindy is presenting the research titled as "Moving Journalism in a New Direction? Business Models of Digital News Organizations in Kazakhstan".
Journalists everywhere are concerned about how to keep their news organizations operating during these rapidly changing times. Some of those journalists are their own managers, as they created digital businesses to fill niches they saw in the information vacuum. Research has focused on digital business models in North America and Europe, but none has centered on Central Asia. Because these countries were part of the former Soviet Union, they had business models that relied on government support of journalism. However, those outlets would not be considered “free press.” Since Kazakhstan gained independence more than 30 years ago, some media managers have moved away from the government-supported model to produce independent news. The current research study interviewed 12 of those journalists to see what they are doing to adjust to the digital news space and have successful journalism businesses. The research question was, How do culture and location influence how digital news organizations strategically respond to changes in the journalism industry in Kazakhstan? In sum, Kazakhstan is a growing area related to digital news organizations, but very little research has been done in Central Asia. Therefore, this study is a good start in examining Central Asian journalism entrepreneurship and how they have used cultural knowledge to adapt to changing times.
The seminar will run in a hybrid format, you can join in room B6046 or on Zoom Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

These systems are reshaping teaching roles, pedagogical methods and fundamental beliefs about knowledge. Sarah will discuss how teachers' reasoning and pedagogical beliefs are evolving and adapting to these changes. MMTC research Seminar presented by guests Chetna Chauhan (Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia) and Sher Jahan Khan (FORE School of Management, India).MMTC seminar with Chetna Chauhan (Universidad de Los Andes, Colombia) and Sher Jahan Khan (FORE School of Management, India). Chetna is presenting the research titled as "Investigating the algorithmic transparency within organizations through upper echelons perspective". Drawing on Upper Echelons Theory, this study examines how top management team (TMT) characteristics shape firms’ adoption of algorithmic transparency and service ethics in competitive contexts. Using a Bayesian hierarchical modeling approach, we analyze survey data collected through validated instruments, complemented by firm-level variables such as CEO founder status, CEO IT background, CEO gender, and Chief Information Officer in Top Management Team. The Bayesian framework allows us to capture the inherent noise in Likert-based responses and incorporate prior information for more robust estimates. The findings highlight the role of executive attributes in driving ethical and transparent algorithmic practices and provide theoretical and managerial insights into how leadership profiles influence firms’ technological and ethical orientations. The seminar will run in a hybrid format Organizer: Media, Management and Transformation Centre |

MMTC research seminar with Giovanna Attanasio and Cinzia Battistella from University of Udine, Italy.MMTC seminar with Giovanna Attanasio and Cinzia Battistella from University of Udine, Italy. "Charting the temporal evolution of stakeholder involvement in business model for sustainability: A comprehensive bibliometric review". This paper aims to explore and analyse the temporal evolution of the concept of stakeholder involvement, highlighting the transformations, influences, and interpretations that this concept has undergone over the years. The particular setting is business models for sustainability (BMfS). Through in-depth bibliometric literature review and critical analysis, co-citation analysis is used to identify the past themes in the topic and bibliographic coupling analysis to explore its recent developments. Future developments of the themes are then outlined. The paper proposes a conceptual framework called Sustainability Strategy Map for Stakeholder Involvement that can help organisations move towards business models for sustainability, acting on purpose, architecture and involvement to achieve outcomes. The goal is to create a detailed map of the evolution of this concept over time, highlighting crucial milestones, controversies, and connections with other key concepts. Major results show that, compared with the past, recent research is more practical, improvement oriented, expanded to polluting industries and focused on economic performance. Finally, stakeholder involvement shifted from management and engagement to integration, a deeper and longer connection characterised by a strategic relationship. Trial lecture for appointment as Associate Professor - Erik BergströmWelcome to Erik Bergström's trial lecture for appointment as Associate Professor on October 15th, 14.00 in E1405 (Gjuterisalen). Title Abstract In today’s digital world, information is one of the most valuable assets any organisation has. To protect it, best practices have led to the development of information classification methods, now embedded in standards such as ISO/IEC 27000. The goal of classification is to determine the value of an asset, which then feeds into risk analysis. This makes information classification central to risk management, a cornerstone for identifying the most critical assets and deciding where to invest in countermeasures. The challenge, however, is that many organisations struggle to put classification into practice. This lecture explores why classification is so essential and what makes it so difficult. By unpacking real-world challenges such as unclear guidelines, subjective judgments, and the trade-off between simplicity and precision, I will show that classification is not just a technical task but also a cultural and organisational one. Finally, I will outline an agenda for how to approach the domain more effectively and highlight important areas for future research. Welcome! Organizer: School of Engineering |

Esther Lim presents at Co-LabCo-Lab is an international network consisting of researchers mainly from the US and various countries in Europe. You are warmly welcome to attend when Jönköping Academy doctoral student Esther Lim presents her research in this context. Talk Title: The Process of Change in Introducing Coproduction - the Case of the ESTHER Network in Singapore Description: Organisational change is often driven by strategy, structure, and leadership. Yet beneath these mechanisms lie the cultural and relational foundations that shape how change is understood and sustained. Using an insider action research approach, the study investigates how managers, practitioners, and service users make sense of and negotiate coproduction in their daily work. Drawing on interviews, focus groups, observations, document analysis, and survey data, the research captures how change unfolds at structural and relational levels. The talk explores these foundations through the introduction of coproduction—specifically the ESTHER Network—within Singapore’s public healthcare system. Bio: Esther Lim is the chief allied health professional in Singapore General Hospital, SingHealth. Trained in social work and family and marital therapy, she also holds a Master of Science in Evidence-Based Social Intervention from the University of Oxford. MMTC research Seminar presented by Zanele RydhMMTC research Seminar presented by Zanele Rydh Constructing Prosocial Motivation: A Process Model of Identity Work in Social Entrepreneurship How do social entrepreneurs sustain their drive to “do good” amid adversity and shifting missions? In this seminar, Zanele presents a process model of how prosocial motivation evolves as part of entrepreneurs’ identity work. Drawing on rich qualitative cases, she shows how moral purpose is not a fixed trait but a dynamic, narratively constructed practice — continually built, reaffirmed, and adapted over time. The study sheds new light on the emotional and reflexive processes that help social entrepreneurs maintain ethical commitment and resilience in complex contexts.
