Family business groups as a research context – An important but under studied phenomenon

ABSTRACT:  The paper highlights that research on turning one family business into a family business group (FBG), which may span across diverse business sectors and generations, is relevant and important so that we can understand the development and depth of family businesses.  The emergence and development of family business groups showcase the dynamics of families in business and the decisions they proactively, or reactively, take to business opportunities or institutional and contextual challenges. Family business groups are ubiquitous, and influential, and play a major role in national economies. While much of the current research around this topic has so far focused on emerging economies, more knowledge is needed on family business groups in developed economies; specifically, how the
