A lot of outdoor projects in preschools and schools show: In the outdoor nature many children and groups of children behave differently than in enclosed spaces and can benefit in various regards. There is a huge range of studies and literature about stimulations, about affordances and corresponding experiences of nature for children’s learning or developmental processes. But is there also a special impact in relation to language development? Are atmospheres and interactions in natural settings supportive in terms of producing, finding and using words?  The talk will deal with that and suggests how a language supporting approach might be conceptualized.

With reference to a project addressing social disadvantaged children in Germany (“Natur bildet”; bsj Marburg) and to the ongoing Erasmus+ project “Early Language Development in Nature (ELaDiNa)” some theoretical ideas and practical examples will be presented.

You are very welcome to join and to discuss.

Martin Vollmar: scientific advisor at bsj Marburg (children and youth organization focusing nature, adventure, body, social disadvantage
